Crescent City leaves Jackson with a point in hand

Jackson, MS (May 29th, 2023) – Crescent City continued their four consecutive game away run, visiting the league champs, Gaffa FC, over Memorial Day weekend. Coming off a deflating loss in Alexandria, it was evident that a result was needed to keep the playoff hopes alive. A hard-fought battle between the two teams ended in a 0-0 draw.

The first half opened up with the home team flying on all cylinders and pinning the New Orleans boys back in their own half for much of the first 10 minutes of play. While most of the play was happening on the defensive foot for CCFC, the young keeper, Andrew Garvey, didn’t have much to worry about as both centerbacks, Anthony Peters and Alex Michael, kept Gaffa from having any open looks at goal. CCFC would find their rhythm and begin transitioning the play into Gaffa’s side of the field as the first half progressed. The first chance at scoring came in the 17th minute when winger Crisitian Canales found the end of a great cross from right back PJ Lynch, which was easily collected by the Gaffa keeper. In the 24th minute, Anthony Peters found himself with an open look as he took an ambitious 30-yard shot that sailed wide of the goal. Crescent City would keep that momentum going in the 29th minute as PJ Lynch sent another great cross to find a streaking Cristian Canales, who put it past the home team’s keeper, but an unfortunate offside call would negate the goal. In the last 5 minutes of the first half, another cross from PJ Lynch found the head of forward Scott Burris, sailing just wide.

The second half posed major issues for both sides and the referees as half of the field lights malfunctioned, forcing the game to stop in the 50th minute. Both teams agreed to play through the unfortunate occurrence, and the referees allowed the game to continue. Alex Michael had an opportunity and fired off an early shot that sailed wide shortly after the stoppage. In the 66th minute, CCFC capitalized on the karma as an offside flag called off an impressive Gaffa counter-attack, keeping the game tied at 0-0. Ryan Jeanfreau tested the Gaffa keeper after another PJ Lynch cross sailed into the box in the 69th minute. Gaffa began to pose more danger on the counter-attacking front as the game went on, forcing Andrew Garvey to come up big after a 1v1 opportunity in the 74th minute. The last significant chance from either club came in the 83rd minute when Anthony Peters pummeled a header into the top corner, but an acrobatic effort from the Gaffa keeper closed out the game at 0-0.

Crescent City closes out their four game away run with a trip to Oak Grove, MS to take on Southern States SC II. The first meeting on May 6th finished with the Mississippi crew taking home 3 points after an early penalty secured the victory.

The boys return home on June 10th to square off with BRSC Capitals. Tickets can be found here. Come out and support your hometown club.
